Stage 1: No Cognitive Impairment
Symptoms: No memory loss or cognitive issues are evident. The person functions normally.
Stage 2: Very Mild Cognitive Decline
Symptoms: Normal age-related forgetfulness, such as forgetting names or where objects were placed. No symptoms are obvious to loved ones.
Stage 3: Mild Cognitive Decline
Symptoms: Friends and family may start to notice subtle changes, such as difficulty finding words, planning, or remembering recent events. Performance issues at work or social situations may occur.
Stage 4: Moderate Cognitive Decline (Mild/Early-Stage Dementia)
Symptoms: Deficits are more apparent. The person may struggle with complex tasks like managing finances, cooking, or traveling. They may become withdrawn or moody.
Stage 5: Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline (Moderate Dementia)
Symptoms: Significant gaps in memory are noticeable, including forgetting phone numbers, addresses, or the time/day. Assistance is required for daily activities (ADLs) like choosing clothing.
Stage 6: Severe Cognitive Decline (Moderately Severe/Middle Dementia)
Symptoms: Personality and behaviour changes occur,such as wandering, anxiety, or aggression. Individuals need help with dressing, bathing, and using the toilet. They may forget the names of close family members.
Stage 7: Very Severe Cognitive Decline (Late/End-Stage Dementia)
Symptoms: Near-total loss of ability to respond to the environment, converse, or control movement. Individuals require 24-hour care, lose the ability to smile or hold up their heads, and may have difficulty swallowing.
